Hardest working player you've never heard ofMike Mache is no Henry Ellenson or Luke Fischer. His name does not pop up in basketball conversations around campus. In fact, Mike Mache hardly ever sees the court on game days.
But don't let this fool you. Mache is considered to be one of the hardest workers on the Marquette men's basketball team. Head coach Steve Wojciechowski loves the energy that he brings to practices and warmups. "As a walk-on, I know that I'm not a guy that will be at the top of the rotation" says Mache. "I know that I can't help the team on the court, so I do all I can behind the scenes." Mike is a business major at Marquette and has always showed promise as a leader. "I've always been good at working in groups and motivating others. When I first got the news last year that I was going to be on the team, I immediately made it my goal to become a leader in the locker room." He has also learned plenty of other valuable skills while on the team. Being a student athlete is a demanding task. Mache has had to manage his classes while also having daily practices and workouts as well as taking frequent road trips. "It's tough. But they help us out with tutors and everything. The schedule is exhausting, but it's good preparation for the real world." All of the hard work has definitely paid off. Mike was recently rewarded with a full scholarship for the semester. "It was such an honor. The whole team and coaching staff knew before they told me and they made it a huge surprise. Those guys have become family over the past year, it was so much fun sharing that moment with them." |
