This photo slideshow had a couple interesting twists and turns. When I was first began working on the CNN style story last Wednesday, my immediate thought was that a professor would make a great subject. It wasn't long into my research through Marquette Wire that I realized a student might be even more interesting and also more relatable to readers.
I had my heart set on interviewing a student athlete right away. I have always been an extreme sports fan and I am very passionate about Marquette's teams. An article about Liam Byrnes, long stick midfielder for the men's lacrosse team, caught my eye. The article informed me that Byrnes is poised for a monster season at MU and has a future in Major League Lacrosse.
I contacted Liam as soon as I could and he very kindly told me that he would be happy to participate. I was so excited at the prospect of interviewing such a talented kid. Although I don't know much about lacrosse, I was still very excited to hear what he had to say and also to learn a bit more about the game.
Unfortunately, it all fell through when I asked Liam about his availability over the weekend. The team left on Friday for a scrimmage in Michigan, making it impossible for me to complete the project before the due date. Luckily, I was able to find a replacement that same day.
Even better, it was a basketball player, which is my favorite Marquette athletic team and something I thought I might not be able to pull off. Mike Mache, a senior walk-on, couldn't have been more accommodating. I was surprised at how he was so willing to help out during a particularly busy weekend.
I found this assignment to be both challenging and exciting. It was a tough task to find a subject in the short time before the due date, but it was also very exciting to spend time with someone so involved with the team that I follow so passionately.
